MES was engaged by the CTA’s Department of Education to provide Early Grade Reading (EGR) workshops to parents of primary grade children in south and northeast Tibetan settlements. MES team, comprising of education and reading specialists, developed the content of the EGR workshop. The workshops were held in Bylakuppe in Karnataka, and Miao and Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh in August and September 2024. A total of 349 (240F/109M) parents took part in the workshops.
The workshop sessions were led by MES education specialists Jamyang Gyaltsen and Kalsang Wangdu. They facilitated discussions with the participating parents on two broad themes. The first one is the cognitive, academic, socio-emotional benefits of reading. The second theme focuses on the key strategies and parental practices that promote reading at home such as talking and interaction, read aloud, storytelling, building home library, and modelling reading, with the parents.
